Product Highlights
-
Material: Natural Solid Wood in both components, with a long feathered figure and dark streaks that travel the length of the top and reappear on the curve below.
-
Two components: A shaped top plate and a single carved base. They are separate elements, and the design is about how the first rests on the second.
-
Top plate: A freeform pebble outline — no straight sides and no corners, with the perimeter swelling on one flank and drawing in on the other.
-
A notch in the outline: One side of the plate is cut inward in a shallow concave bite, so the shape reads as a kidney rather than an oval.
-
Edge profile: The whole perimeter is thinned and eased to a soft rolled line, which makes a broad plate look light from every seat in the room.
-
Base: One continuous sweep of solid wood, rising at both extremities into wide flared shoulders that carry the plate and dipping between them into a deep, smooth trough.
-
The opening: An open archway, not a cut hole. It is bounded above by the underside of the plate, below by the crest of the base, and it stands open at the front, at the back and beneath the middle.
-
Floor contact: Two broad curved footings at the outer ends of the sweep, with the base lifting clear of the floor across everything in between.
-
Overhang: The plate reaches well past the base at one end, so the table appears to be balanced rather than mounted.
-
Surface: A restrained satin, warm rather than bright, which lets the curve be read by the way light slides along it.
-
Structure: Purely sculptural — no drawer, no door, no shelf, no fitting, no metal on show.
-
Available in three sizes: 39"W × 20"D × 15"H, 47"W × 22"D × 16"H, and 55"W × 22"D × 16"H.
A Statement of Nature
The name promises a loop, and the eye obliges — but look properly and the sweep never closes. It leaves the floor at one side, climbs into a wide shoulder, dives through a deep trough and climbs again to the far shoulder, then stops. What you take for a ring is an arch, and the difference is the reason the table feels supported rather than sealed.
Above it, the plate contributes the opposite quality. It has no straight side anywhere, one flank curls inward, and it sits on the shoulders of the base with a long unsupported reach at one end. Two shapes, entirely different in character: the base is symmetrical and structural, the plate is loose and drawn by hand.
In a low-lit contemporary room with plaster walls and pale seating, the piece behaves like Sculptural Minimalism with an Organic Modern accent — very little detail, and the whole effect carried by an outline and a shadow.
Natural Materials & Craftsmanship
Plate and base are Natural Solid Wood in genuine thickness. The arch in particular could not be assembled from thin material: the curve has to be taken out of a mass that already contained it, which is why the figure runs unbroken over the shoulder, down the inner face of the trough and out onto the footing.
The two components are cut with different priorities. The plate is chosen for its surface — long feathered bands, a dark passage crossing the middle, tonal shift from one flank to the other — because that face is what the room looks at. The base is chosen for how the grain will follow a curve without running out at the crest, where the section is thinnest and the load is highest.
Shaping the trough is the work that cannot be hurried. The inner surface is a compound curve, tightening as it approaches each shoulder, and it has to reflect light evenly along its whole run or the eye finds the flat spot instantly. Our makers cut it, then bring it up by hand and check it by hand, and the concave face is finished to precisely the standard of the convex one.
The finish is a hand-rubbed satin, deliberately short of a mirror, because a high shine on a curve of this shape hides the very form it is meant to show. Surface tone is available as Brown Tone Finish, Walnut Tone Finish, Oak Tone Finish and Black Tone Finish — all four are colours of applied finish on the same Natural Solid Wood, and none of them names a species.
Sculptural Design
Begin with the plate. It is a single continuous plane, thinner at the rim than through the middle, with an outline that bulges, narrows and takes one clear concave bite out of itself. There is no inlay, no seam and nothing raised, so a tray, a pair of vessels and a stack of books all sit flat, and there is no corner anywhere to walk into.
The base is one gesture. It leaves the floor on a broad curved footing, rises steeply into a shoulder that flares outward as it meets the plate, then falls away in a long smooth trough that passes under the centre of the table before climbing to the opposite shoulder. Both shoulders are wide where they take the plate and narrow where they turn downward, which is what keeps a heavy form looking agile.
Between the two runs the opening. It is framed by the underside of the plate above and the crest of the base below, and it is open on all the other sides — stand at the sofa and you see straight under the table to the floor covering behind it. It is a void and only a void: nothing is meant to be kept in it, and there is no shelf, liner or divider anywhere inside.
Because only the two footings touch the floor and the arch lifts clear between them, a soft pool of shadow gathers under the middle of the table. That shadow is doing structural work visually — it separates the mass of the base from the floor and is the reason a piece with this much timber in it still reads as light standing in the open.
Versatile Placement
Meant to be seen in the round. Push it against a wall and the arch closes to the eye, which removes the point of the design.
- Living room, centred on a rug ahead of a low seat, with the notched flank turned toward the seating.
- Contemporary interior with a dark wall unit behind, where the pale figure of the plate separates cleanly from the background.
- Lounge or study, standing free of any wall so the arch keeps its opening.
- Showroom, gallery or design office, treated as an object first and a surface second.
- Wide hallway or landing seating area, where a shape with no corners is easier to pass.
Customization
Three sizes are produced: 39"W × 20"D × 15"H, 47"W × 22"D × 16"H, and 55"W × 22"D × 16"H. The smallest sits an inch lower and two inches shallower, which is deliberate — at that width the arch has to be proportionally shallower to stay convincing. The 47" and 55" share depth and height and differ only in the run of the plate, so the larger simply extends the overhang. Custom sizing may be available; send the dimensions of your seating and the rug it will stand on, and we will suggest which reads best.
Four tone finishes can be selected: Brown Tone Finish, Walnut Tone Finish, Oak Tone Finish and Black Tone Finish. Each names the colour of the finish laid over the same Natural Solid Wood; species is not part of the specification. On a form built from curves the tone changes how the shape is understood — lighter tones spread the light evenly along the trough and reveal the whole sweep at a glance, while the deepest tone reduces the piece to an outline with the arch reading almost as shadow.
Natural grain and tonal variation make every piece one of a kind. Because both components are shaped rather than assembled, the precise line of the pebble outline, the depth of the concave bite and the way the figure crosses the shoulders will differ from the piece photographed. Minor dimensional variation may occur due to the handcrafted process, which is inherent to shaping a curve by eye. Production photos or a short video may be provided on request before the table leaves our workshop.
Care & Maintenance
A soft dry cloth over the plate is the daily routine, worked along the direction of the figure. Then take the same cloth down into the trough and follow the curve from one shoulder to the other; a soft dry brush is easier where the curve tightens under each shoulder and a hand will not sit flat.
Treat the plate as the working surface it is. Coasters under drinks, a mat under anything hot, spills lifted as they happen and the area dried straight afterwards. On a satin finish an untreated water mark shows as a pale ring, and bleach, solvent or an abrasive pad will cut through the surface permanently.
Position the table clear of radiators, heating outlets and long hours of direct sun. Uneven drying is what shifts the tone of solid wood over time, and on a shaped piece it can also open a fine check where the section is thinnest, at the crest of the arch.
Confirm both footings sit flat before the table is loaded, and add a thin felt strip beneath each on a hard floor. Refresh the surfaces once or twice a year with a suitable wood oil or wax, buffing thoroughly so nothing pools where the shoulders meet the plate. When the table has to move, lift it from beneath the two footings with two people — never carry it by the overhanging end of the plate, and never drag a curved footing across flooring.
Important
- Two-part construction: a freeform shaped top plate resting on one separately carved sculptural base.
- The base is an open arch, not a closed ring — it rises into a shoulder at each end and dips into a deep trough between them.
- The opening beneath the plate is bounded above and below only; it stands open at the front, at the back and under the centre.
- Two broad curved footings take the floor, with the base lifting clear between them. No frame, no plinth and no separate supports.
- No drawers, doors, shelving or metal fittings of any kind.
- Both components are handcrafted from Natural Solid Wood and shaped by hand.
- Decorative items are not included.
Once our products are finished, we disassemble them into several pieces before shipping. This isn't a shortcut — it's actually to protect your order! Our pieces can be large and bulky, so breaking them down makes them much easier to package securely and move safely, which means your item arrives without any dents, cracks, or damage from bumps during transit.
No worries about assembly, though — our craftsmen carefully design every joint and connection to fit together snugly and precisely once you put it together. Plus, we include detailed assembly instructions with every order, so you can set everything up with confidence.
Note
- Listing includes the coffee table only, in the size and finish selected.
- Decorative items appearing in the photographs — the tall cream bottle vase with its gold band, the small ribbed bud vase beside it, the stack of pale books, the sofa with its grey cushions and ochre lumbar cushion, the wool rug, the curtains and the dark shelving unit with its contents — are not included.
- Each piece is handcrafted from Natural Solid Wood with unique grain and tonal variation.
- The archway under the plate is a sculptural void. It is not a cubby or a compartment, and the table offers no storage.
- Because the base is shaped by hand, the exact depth of the trough and the flare of each shoulder vary slightly between tables. This is inherent to hand shaping and is not a defect.
- The overhang at one end is intentional. The plate is meant to reach past the base rather than sit centred on it.
- A tone finish name tells you the colour of the applied finish and nothing else; the plate and the base are cut from the same Natural Solid Wood in every size and every tone.
