Product Highlights
-
Material: Natural Solid Wood, chosen for a swirling crotch figure that turns and doubles back on itself across the whole face of the board.
-
Colour of the board: Warm amber through to caramel in the open field, dropping to a near-black margin where the timber met the bark.
-
Tabletop: A single board of unusual depth, with the tree's own outline retained down both long sides — the profile advances and recedes several times along each side and is never the same width twice.
-
Edge condition: Genuinely raw in origin, then made safe. The gnarled crust, the pockets and the small cavities along the margin are the tree's, cleaned of anything loose, consolidated and sealed rather than cut back to a fair curve.
-
Ends: Trimmed square across the grain, so the board has two crisp terminations and all the irregularity is held in the long sides.
-
Base: Two low pedestal panels of Natural Solid Wood — broad flat boards standing on edge beneath the top, running across the depth of the table.
-
Proportion: The pedestals are deliberately short. Slab depth accounts for a large share of the total height, which is the whole point of the design.
-
Position of the pedestals: Both stand a good distance in from the ends, so the board reaches out past its support at each extremity.
-
Junction: Each pedestal seats into the underside on a hidden housing; nothing mechanical shows from the front, the end or the floor.
-
Surface: Built to a high, almost liquid gloss — the top holds a clear reflection and gives the amber field a lit-from-within look.
-
Contents: A board and two pedestals. There is no drawer, no shelf, no compartment and no fitting of any kind.
-
Available in three sizes: 39"W × 20"D × 16"H, 47"W × 22"D × 16"H, and 55"W × 22"D × 16"H.
A Statement of Nature
Height is where this design makes its argument. Sixteen inches is a normal figure for a table meant to sit alongside a sofa, but here a large fraction of it belongs to the board itself, and only what remains is given to the supports. The result is a piece that is nearly all timber and barely any furniture.
That decision is what makes the edge worth having. Because the board is presented at knee height and turned outward rather than tucked under an apron, the crust along both long sides is at eye level from a seated position — the pockets, the black margin, the places where the outline swells into a bay and pulls back again.
Set in a plastered city apartment with tall windows and pale upholstery, it does the job of an artwork lying flat. The register is Organic Modern with a Wabi-Sabi undertow: no ornament, no contrast material, no relief anywhere from the wood itself.
Natural Materials & Craftsmanship
Board and pedestals alike are Natural Solid Wood. Kneel at the end of the table and the same swirl you followed across the face runs down through the full depth of the edge and turns onto the back of the board — there is no applied lip, and no facing anywhere on the piece.
Figure of this kind comes from where a trunk divides. The grain arriving from two directions collides, folds and feathers, and the pattern that results cannot be requested or repeated; it is simply what that part of that tree did. Our makers orient the board so the busiest passage lands near the middle of the length, where it will be seen.
The making splits into two tasks that pull against each other. Faces are flattened, stabilised and worked through fine abrasives until they are dead level. The margins are handled with far more restraint — loose crust removed, weak areas consolidated, cavities left as cavities, and the whole irregular perimeter sealed with its shape intact.
The gloss is the last stage and the slowest. It is laid down in successive thin coats, each one cut back before the next goes on, until the depth you see belongs to the wood underneath rather than to a film sitting on top of it. Surface tone is offered as Brown Tone Finish, Walnut Tone Finish, Oak Tone Finish and Black Tone Finish, each of which names the colour of that applied finish over the same Natural Solid Wood.
Sculptural Design
The board is presented flat and unbroken. Nothing is inlaid into it, nothing is cut through it, and there is no join anywhere across the width — the whole plane is one piece, which is why a tray, a stack of books and a pot of tea can all sit level on it at once.
The two pedestals underneath are plain to the point of being self-effacing. Each is a wide, flat board of full thickness stood on edge, spanning most of the depth of the table, its faces dressed and its corners barely eased. They are not turned, not carved and not tapered; they exist to hold the slab at height and to disappear beneath it.
What gives them their quality is height, or the lack of it. Kept low, they read as a plinth rather than as a frame, and the shadow they cast is short and tight against the floor. Seen from across a room the table looks like a plank of timber that has been set down and left there.
Standing both pedestals well inboard leaves each end of the board unsupported. That overhang keeps the corners clear for feet and for seating pulled up close, and it lets the eye finish on the natural outline instead of running into a support. Between the pedestals there is nothing at all: no rail, no lower level, no case and no visible fixing, so the floor covering shows through the full span.
Versatile Placement
Proportioned as the principal low table for a seating group, and worth turning so that a long side, not an end, faces the open floor.
- Living room, squared up to a long sofa with the more strongly figured side outward.
- City apartment with tall windows, where hard daylight crossing the gloss shows the depth of the polish.
- Lounge or sitting room used for tea and conversation, where the top is in constant service.
- Hotel suite or private members' room, as a single low object of obvious value.
- Loft or open-plan floor, holding the seating half of the room without adding anything vertical.
Customization
Three sizes are produced, all standing at 16"H: 39"W × 20"D × 16"H, 47"W × 22"D × 16"H, and 55"W × 22"D × 16"H. The 39" is the apartment option and keeps the proportion tight; the 47" and 55" both take an additional two inches of depth, which allows more of the natural outline to survive on each long side before the board is trimmed. Custom sizing may be available — send us the length of your sofa and the clear floor in front of it, and we will recommend a width.
Four tone finishes are available: Brown Tone Finish, Walnut Tone Finish, Oak Tone Finish and Black Tone Finish. These are colours of finish applied to the same Natural Solid Wood in every size, and none of them is a species of timber. Under a gloss this high the tone choice is very visible: the lighter tones keep the amber field luminous and the dark margin sharply separate from it, while the deepest tone brings margin and field together and turns the top into a single reflective plane.
Natural grain and tonal variation make every piece one of a kind, and on this design that extends to the silhouette — the number of bays along each side, the depth of the crust and the position of every cavity are dictated by the board we cut and will not reproduce the photographs. Minor dimensional variation may occur due to the handcrafted process, since the perimeter is set by the timber and not by a drawing. We are glad to send production photos or a short video of your own table before it is packed.
Care & Maintenance
A high gloss shows everything, so keep a soft dry cloth to hand and pass it over the top often. Take it along both long sides too, following the outline in and out of each bay; where the margin is pocketed, a dry soft brush lifts dust that a cloth only pushes further in.
Coasters under every glass, a mat under anything hot, and no liquid left standing. A barely damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one deals with ordinary marks. Nothing containing bleach, ammonia or abrasive grit should ever touch this surface — on a polished finish the dull patch left behind cannot be buffed out.
Place the table away from a radiator or a heating vent and out of long hours of direct sun, both of which dry one part of a board faster than another. A slab of this depth takes up and gives off moisture with the seasons, and slight movement across the width is normal behaviour in solid wood.
Stand it on level flooring and check that both pedestals bear their share; on a thick rug, make sure neither is riding on a fold. Once or twice a year, feed the surfaces with a wood oil or wax suited to a finished top and buff off every trace, particularly where the pedestals meet the underside. Move the table with two people lifting from directly under the pedestals — never by an overhanging end, and never by dragging it across the floor.
Important
- Natural edge retained on both long sides, with crust, pockets and cavities cleaned, consolidated and sealed rather than trimmed away.
- Ends cut square across the board; irregularity is confined to the two long sides.
- Two low solid wood pedestal panels, set inboard so both ends of the top reach out unsupported.
- Hidden housed junctions between pedestals and board; no bracket, plate or fastener is visible.
- Nothing between or inside the pedestals — no rail, no lower level, no drawer and no enclosed space.
- Handcrafted from Natural Solid Wood.
- Decorative items are not included.
Once our products are finished, we disassemble them into several pieces before shipping. This isn't a shortcut — it's actually to protect your order! Our pieces can be large and bulky, so breaking them down makes them much easier to package securely and move safely, which means your item arrives without any dents, cracks, or damage from bumps during transit.
No worries about assembly, though — our craftsmen carefully design every joint and connection to fit together snugly and precisely once you put it together. Plus, we include detailed assembly instructions with every order, so you can set everything up with confidence.
Note
- Listing includes the coffee table only, in the size and finish selected.
- Decorative items shown in the photographs — the round stone-glazed vase, the small lidded ceramic teapot, the round ceramic pot beside it, the shallow dish, the stack of pale books, the lidded woven basket, the flat-woven rug, the sofa with its cushions and the branch arrangement on the windowsill — are not included.
- Each piece is handcrafted from Natural Solid Wood with unique grain and tonal variation.
- The dark crust, the pockets and the small cavities along the natural margin are features of the timber and are kept on purpose. They are sealed and safe to touch, but they are not sanded flat.
- Because the supports are intentionally low, the board is a large part of the finished height. This is a design decision, not a shortened base.
- Tone finish names refer to the colour of the applied finish only. All three sizes are built from the same Natural Solid Wood.
