How High Should a Sofa Table Be Behind a Couch?
Level with the sofa back, or an inch or two below it. That is the single measurement that decides whether a console behind a couch looks deliberate or accidental. Most sofas have a back somewhere between 26" and 32" from the floor, which is why these come in 25", 27" and 30" depending on the size you choose - measure your own sofa back first and work down from it. A table that stands above the back line cuts the sofa in half from across the room; one that sits well below it leaves a gap you notice every time you walk past.
Length and depth are the other two. Stop the table short of the full sofa length - roughly two thirds to three quarters looks right, with a little sofa showing at each end - which is why these run from 42" and 47" up to 86", enough for a long sectional. Depth stays at 12" throughout, and that is deliberate: any deeper and the sofa has to move forward into the room, or the walkway behind it closes up. Leave 4" to 6" between the table and the sofa back so cushions can move, and if the table is going against a wall instead, the same depth keeps a hallway passable.
| Sofa table | Storage | Form | Heights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arched Bay Fluted | Three fluted drawers, three arched bays | Curved ends sweeping to the floor | 25" |
| Alternating Front | Two carved drawers, four open bays | Case on small tapered feet | 25" |
| Rippled Reeding | Three doors, three open bays above | Recessed base in a contrasting finish | 25" |
| Five Openings | None | Five oval voids cut through the body | 25"-30" |
| Figure of Eight | None | One band crossing at the centre | 25"-30" |
| Forked Trunk | None | Trunk splitting into two arms, live edge top | 25"-30" |
| Off-Centre Column | None | One S-curved column set to one side | 25"-30" |
| Mirrored Scrolls | None | Two coils meeting at a waist, on a plinth | 25"-30" |
All eight are handcrafted from natural solid wood in Oak, Walnut, Brown and Black tones, 12" deep. Widths run from 42" or 47" up to 86". The first three are 25" high in every size; the rest are 25" at 42"-47", 27" at 59" and 30" at 71"-86".
Console Table with Fluted Storage Drawer in Natural Solid Wood Design
Three arch-topped bays sit above three fluted drawers, and the ends of the case sweep round in a deep curve and carry on down to meet the floor, so the whole body reads as one stretched, softened shell. Four widths from 47" to 86", 25" high throughout.
The most storage of the eight, and at 25" it stays under almost any sofa back. Open bays with solid back panels mean the things on display do not read straight through into the room behind.
Console Table with Wave-Carved Drawers and Open Display Shelves in Wood
Openings and closed fronts alternate: a row of three bays along the top, then a drawer, a bay and a second drawer beneath. The two drawer faces are carved into a dense rippled texture and the case stands on small tapered feet. 47" to 86" wide at 25" high.
Four open bays and two drawers is the right split behind a sofa - remotes and coasters go in the drawers, and the bays take the things you reach over the back for. Carved fronts hide fingerprints better than flat ones.
Console Table with Fluted Cabinet Doors in Natural Solid Wood
The reeding refuses to stay straight: ribs run vertically down each of the three fronts, then buckle and twist through the middle of the panel like a ripple passing behind them. A row of three open bays sits above, and the case rests on a recessed base in a contrasting finish. 47" to 86" wide, 25" high.
Closed doors rather than drawers means one deep space behind each front, which is where the things nobody wants to look at end up. The distorted reeding catches a side lamp better than any flat panel.
Console Table with Biomorphic Oval Openings in Natural Solid Wood
Five oval voids are cut clean through the body, three along the upper band and two lower down between them, with the outer profile rolling into soft waves at each end while the top stays flat and usable. Five widths, 42" to 86", 25" to 30" high.
Cut-through openings are the reason to put this behind a sofa rather than against a wall - you see light and floor through it from the seat, so a long piece never blocks the room.
Console Table with Biomorphic Curved Wood Base in Natural Solid Wood
From the front the base draws a figure of eight: one band loops out to the left, crosses itself at the centre and loops out again to the right, enclosing two large oval voids. The top above is a long slab with fully rounded ends. 42" to 86" wide.
Rounded ends matter behind a sofa, where people walk past the corner constantly. The crossing band gives a long run something to look at without adding any bulk.
Console Table with Sculptural Curved Natural Solid Wood Base Design
This one takes its shape from a tree: a single trunk spreads into a root-like foot on the floor and forks above into two arms that reach up and out to meet the top. The slab they carry keeps its live edge, so the front contour rises and falls exactly as the timber did. Five widths, 42" to 86".
One central foot leaves both ends of the floor clear, which makes vacuuming behind a sofa far less annoying than four legs would. The live edge faces into the room where you actually see it.
Console Table with Flowing Sculptural Base in Natural Solid Wood
The whole support is one S-shaped column set well off to one side, so the live-edge top reaches far out over open floor. The column widens into a rounded pad where it meets the ground and melts into the underside of the slab at the top. 42" to 86" wide, 25" to 30" high.
An off-centre support is worth having where a floor lamp or a side table has to share the space - the open end can sit over whatever is already there. The most weightless-looking piece of the eight.
Console Table with Sculptural Spiral Legs in Natural Solid Wood Design
Two mirrored scrolls stand at the heart of the table, each coiling inward to a tight curl and meeting its twin at a narrow waist in the middle. The carving sits between a flat floor plinth and a thick top whose edges are cut back to a bevel. Five widths from 42" to 86".
The scrolls sit in the centre, so both ends are open underneath - useful if a basket or a pair of stools needs to live there. A floor plinth also means nothing to catch a vacuum on.
🌿 Why Natural Solid Wood?
A sofa table is seen from behind as often as from the front. Walk into most living rooms and the back of the console is what faces the door, which is why these are finished on every visible face rather than left as a raw board where a wall would normally hide it. That only makes sense in solid timber: on veneered board the back is the side that gives the cheapness away, and on a piece 86" long the printed figure starts repeating before it reaches the end.
The shapes need it too. A trunk forking into two arms, a band crossing itself in a figure of eight, oval voids cut clean through the body and reeding that buckles halfway down a panel are all carved out of real material. On a printed face, the cutter goes straight through to the board beneath at exactly the point where the curve is deepest. Solid wood also takes what a sofa table gets: drinks set down over the back, a lamp moved around, a shoulder knocking the end on the way past. Marks stay the same colour as the wood, and the top can be sanded and re-oiled years later.
Measure the sofa back before anything else, then pick a height at or just under it - 25" suits most sofas, with 27" and 30" available in the longer sizes. Keep the length to about three quarters of the sofa, the depth at 12", and leave a few inches of breathing space behind the cushions. After that it is a choice between storage and sculpture: three drawers and open bays if the room needs somewhere to put things, or an open carved base if you would rather see straight through it. Frequently Asked Questions
How high should a sofa table be?
Level with the sofa back or an inch or two below it. Most sofa backs are 26 to 32 inches high, so measure yours first. These come in 25, 27 and 30 inch heights.
How long should a table behind a sofa be?
About two thirds to three quarters of the sofa, so a little sofa shows at each end. These run from 42 inches up to 86 inches for a long sectional.
How deep should a sofa table be?
Twelve inches, which is what all eight are. Any deeper and either the sofa moves into the room or the walkway behind it closes up.
Can a sofa table be used against a wall instead?
Yes. At 12 inches deep they suit a hallway or an entry equally well - the difference is only that the back is on show behind a sofa, and these are finished on every face.
Which of these have storage?
Three of them: the arched-bay model with three fluted drawers, the alternating front with two carved drawers and four bays, and the rippled-reeding model with three doors. The rest are open sculptural forms.
